What is Screen-printing?
Screen-printing is an incredibly versatile process and can be applied to many industries, from Art replication to Printed Circuit Boards for electronics.
Serigraphy, better known as screen-printing is a traditional technique that implements the use of a permeable mesh stretched under tension around a frame. The design is applied to the screen using a photosensitive emulsion, acetate is used as a blocker during exposure, to shield areas of the emulsion from the UV light. The emulsion that is exposed to light will harden, leaving the area of the design soft, this can then be washed out to reveal the design.
choosing the right process for your design
Single colour
If your artwork only requires one colour this is the option for you. Requiring only one screen set-up makes it the most affordable option and can be just as impactful as a print with multiple colours. However, a single colour print can also benefit from a coloured paper stock to add an extra splash of colour to your design.
multi-colour
If your design contains 2 or more colours this is the option for you. Printing the design layer by layer to add each colour and create the final design. Great for colourful graphics and illustrations.
CMYK process
The CMYK Process is a method used to simulate a wide variety of colours using only four colours, CYAN, MAGENTA, YELLOW and KEY (Black) it is great for photography and prints that require a wide range of colours. Similarly to how digital printers use few cartridges to print full-colour imagery.

RECENT PROJECTS
At OFFCUT, we pride ourselves on experimenting with different techniques and pushing screen-printing to its limits. Here are a few of our favourite recent projects.
-
Kleiner Shames’ Glass Sculpture
Layers of glass screen-printed on both sides to create depth in the image. The artwork was separated into its parts and then exposed to the screen, some layers reversed in order to print both side of the glass.
-
Cyanotype T-Shirt project for Fishboy PZ
A limited edition run of 100 T-Shirts for a Penzance-based clothing brand.
